The type species (holotype) of the genus Diatoma is Diatoma vulgaris Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Diatoma maxima (Grunow) Fricke.

Adjective B (Latin), pertaining to winter, also "hiemalis" (Stearn 1973).
