Taxonomic notes
Darienko & Pröschold (2015) note that Shihar & Krauss (1965) described the subgenus Auxenochlorella [of Chlorella], which included one species, C. protothecoides, with four varieties: protothecoides, communis, nannophila, galactophila; Fott & Nováková (1969) examined the morphology of three of the four described varieties and concluded that var. communis did not correspond with the type description and represents C. luteoviridis (=Heterochlorella luteoviridis), and var.mannophila represented C. fusca var. vacuolata (=Scenedesmus vacuolatus); the subgenus Auxenochlorella was upgraded to a genus by Kalina & Puncochárová (1987). - (26 May 2015) - G.M. Guiry
= A. protothecoides? According to Darienko & Pröschold (2015: 397) the two varieties protothechoides and galactophila had almost identical SSU rDNA sequences, confirming that both belong to the same species. - (26 May 2015) - G.M. Guiry
