Nomenclatural note
"Taxon inquirendum. Described by Meneghini (1844: 285) from Dalmatia (Croatia). At p. 302 of the the same paper, Meneghini (op. cit.) described Ca. apiculatum (see above), a species differing from the previous one in showing tetrasporangia sessile (with a pedicel in Ca. graniferum) and a bulging apical cell (absent in Ca. graniferum). Zanardini (1861: 102-103), considered the above two species as conspecific [with the name Ca. graniferum, published by Meneghini (1844) at p. 285, having priority over Ca. apiculatum published in the same paper, but at p. 302], thinking that tetrasporangia, provided with a pedicel when young, become sessile when mature and thinking not constant the occurrence of a bulging apical cell. However, it should be noted that both the description and the illustration of thalli of Ca. graniferum given by Zanardini (1861: 101, pl. XI) correspond to the description given by Meneghini of his Ca. apiculatum. Agreeing with Feldmann-Mazoyer's (1941: 439) statement, we exclude the conspecificity between Ca. graniferum and Ca. apiculatum and consider Ca. graniferum a taxon of uncertain taxonomic value."
