Solieria tenera (J.Agardh) M.J.Wynne & W.R.Taylor 1973

Publication details
Solieria tenera (J.Agardh) M.J.Wynne & W.R.Taylor 1973: 100

Published in: Wynne, M.J. & Taylor, W.R. (1973). The status of Agardhiella tenera and Agardhiella baileyi (Rhodophyta, Gigartinales). Hydrobiologia 43: 93-107, 11 figs.

Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Solieria is Solieria chordalis (C.Agardh) J.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Solieria filiformis (Kützing) Gabrielson

Gigartina tenera J.Agardh

Type information
Type locality: West Indies (Womersley 1994: 343). Lectotype: Herb. Agardh, LD 34480 (?); (LD 34483*) (Womersley 1994: 343). Notes: Syntype: Atlantic coast of southern North America; West Indies (Silva et al. 1996: 324). Gabrielson & Hommersand (1982: 41) note that when J. Agardh (1841) originally described G. tenera, he gave as its distribution the Atlantic Ocean along the southern coast of North America and the West Indies; when he transferred it to the genus Rhabdonia he listed specific localities, mentioning the islands of Haiti, St. Croix and Puerto Rico. They note that there are some problems associated with the lectotype, selected by Taylor (Taylor & Rhyne 1970) but accept it for the present. Later, Gabrielson (1985: 277), considers that the lectotype specimen LD 34480 should be superseded and he designates the specimen, LD 34483 (*) as the superseding lectotype since the latter exhibits the greatest conformity with J. Agardh's original description. Silva et al. (1996: 919) note that the specimen 33483 bears an inscription that is not completely legible and thus its provenance is uncertain.

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), soft, delicate (Brown 1946).

Taxonomic notes
In 1851 J. Agardh transferred Gigartina tenera J. Agardh 1841 to the genus Rhabdonia and emended the description. The type sheet of Rhabdonia tenera contains six specimens filed under that name, four of which are Agardhiella subulata (C. Agardh) Kraft & Wynne, while two belong in the genus Solieria. Taylor (in Taylor & Rhyne 1970) selected one of the Solieria specimens LD 34480) as the lectotype of Gigartina tenera based on J. Agardh's emended description but this plant does not agree with the original (1941) description. As no particular specimen can be shown to have been in J. Agardh's hand when he wrote the original description of G. tenera, Gabrielson & Hommersand accept Taylor's lectotypification until such evidence is found (Gabrielson & Hommersand 1982: 41). Gabrielson (1985: 277) designates the specimen LD 34483 as the superseding lectotype of G. tenera J. Agardh as it exhibits the greatest conformity with J. Agardh's original description. See discussion in Silva et al. (1996: 918, 919). - (16 Jul 2009) - Wendy Guiry

Womersley (1994: 343) cites this as current. - (16 Jul 2009) - Wendy Guiry
