The type species (holotype) of the genus Schizymenia is Schizymenia dubyi (Chauvin ex Duby) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Weeksia coccinea (Harvey) S.C.Lindstrom.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), deep red, from scarlet to carmine and crimson (Stearn 1973).
