The type species (holotype) of the genus Desmarestia is Desmarestia aculeata (Linnaeus) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Desmarestia dudresnayi subsp. foliaceae (V.A.Pease) A.F.Peters, E.C.Yang, F.C.Küpper & Prud’homme.
