The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hypoglossum is Hypoglossum woodwardii Kützing.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hypoglossum hypoglossoides (Stackhouse) Collins & Hervey

Adjective (Latin), very small, minute (Stearn 1973).
