The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hypoglossum is Hypoglossum woodwardii Kützing.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Hypoglossum hypoglossoides (Stackhouse) Collins & Hervey.

Initially introduced as Delesseria minuta Kützing, 1836, but not validated. "This species was described by Kützing (1845: 344) from the Adriatic Sea." (Cormaci & al. 344). The name actually appeared two years earlier in 1843. - (05 December 2017) - M.D. Guiry
