The type species (holotype) of the genus Pyropia is Pyropia californica J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Neopyropia retorta (S.M.Kim, H.G.Choi & H.S.Kim) L.-E.Yang & J.Brodie.

Habitat note
Blade phase is epilithic, in exposed intertidal areas, splashed intermittenly by waves. Gametophyte can form dense populations soley or intermixed with P. pseudolinearis (Kim et al., 2018). - (27 April 2018) - G.M. Guiry
