The type species (holotype) of the genus Plagiodinium is Plagiodinium belizeanum M.A.Faust & Balech.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chrysodinium ballux (N.Yamada, Dawut, R.Terada & T.Horiguchi) F.Gómez, Yas.Nakamura & Artigas.
