The type species (holotype) of the genus Operculodinium is Operculodinium centrocarpum (Deflandre & Cookson) D.Wall.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Atlanticodinium janduchenei (Head, G.Norris & P.J.Mudie) Head & Mantilla-Duran.
