This is the type species (holotype) of the genus Agarophyton.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gracilaria chilensis C.J.Bird, McLachlan & E.C.Oliveira
Type locality: Penco, southeastern corner of Bahía Concepción, VIIIth Region, Chile (Bird, McLachlan & Oliveira Filho 1986: 2929). Holotype (female): Hector Romo; 1 September 1982; Intertidal. NRCC 9131 (a) (Bird, McLachlan & Oliveira Filho 1986: 2929). Notes: Isotypes: NRCC, 9131b (male), 9131c (tetrasporangial).
