Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Iridaea is Iridaea cordata (Turner) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Turnerella mertensiana (Postels & Ruprecht) F.Schmitz

Type locality: Ad insulam Sitka (Sitka, Alaska, USA) (Postels & Ruprecht 1840: 18). Lectotype: LE (Gabrielson 1989: 390, figs 1-7). Notes: The type material was shown by Gabrielson (1989: 389-393) to represent Turnerella mertensiana (Postels & Ruprecht) Schmitz

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), Phoenician purple, crimson (Stearn 1973).
