The type species (lectotype) of the genus Peyssonnelia is Peyssonnelia squamaria (S.G.Gmelin) Decaisne ex J.Agardh.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Peyssonnelia boudouresquei Yoneshigue

Type locality: Cape Lookout, North Carolina, USA (Schneider & Reading 1987: 179). Holotype: Schneider 2856; 5 July 1982; Jetty, 4-6 m deep, on living oyster shells . DUKE 17666 (Schneider & Reading 1987: 179). Notes: Holotype: female, male. Shell bearing holotype also contains an overlapping tetrasporic crust. Isotypes female, male tetrasporic specimens in US 95307; tetrasporic specimen in CWS.
