The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota bartayresiana J.V.Lamouroux.

Lamouroux's change of epithet from bartayresiana was unwarranted (Silva, Meñez & Moe, 1987: 75); Lamouroux's paper in Desvaux's Journal de Botanique appeared in April, 1809, whilst the Nouveaux Bulletin des Sciences appeared in May 1809. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
