Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Dilophus is Dilophus gunnianus J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota crispata J.V.Lamouroux.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), alternating (Stearn 1992).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
De Clerck (2003) notes that the rare occurrence of a double-layered medulla forced Taylor to consider this specimen as a forma of D. alternans J. Agardh. However, a double-layered medulla is not uncommon in Dictyota and is reported for D. crispata (Hörnig et al., 1992a: 48, as D. bartayresiana.
