The type species (holotype) of the genus Coelastrella is Coelastrella striolata Chodat.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Coelastrella thermophila var. astaxanthina (K.Ohkoshi, R.T.Yoshida & S.Kawasaki) E. Krivina, M. Sinetova, E. Zadneprovskaya, Shibzukhova, Lobakova & Temraleeva.
