This is a terrestrial species.
Type locality: Atacama Desert ~8 km east of Choros Bajos, 29°18'59" S, 71°140'55" W [Chile] (Pietrasiak et al. 2019: 981). Holotype: May 11, 2009; Biological soil crust on fine sand. NMC 86,485 (Pietrasiak et al. 2019: 981). Notes: "NMC 86,485 [is] a packet consisting of algal culture material of the reference strain ATA2-1-KO14 preserved in 4% formaldehyde and dried biomass of the same strain on glass fiber filters, prepared on the same day from the same culture by one of the authors of this manuscript in accordance with ICN Art. 8.2 (a single gathering), as indicated in this protolog (ICN Recommendation 8A.4)."
