Taxonomic note
This species was described by Cormaci & Furnari (1991) to accommodate the entity previously known in the Mediterranean as Ceramium cingulatum. "In the Mediterranean Sea, this species was erroneously reported as C. cingulatum (Cormaci & Furnari, 1991)." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 204). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Distributional note
"For more details on gametophytes see Cho et al. (2003:552). It should be noted that gametophytes have never been reported from the Mediterranean Sea. From observations carried out in culture by Cormaci & Motta (1989, as C. cingulatum) the Mediterranean specimens reproduce by an apomictic cycle in which from the germination of the "tetraspores" form sporophytes whose "tetraspores" produce new sporophytes which continue the apomictic cycle. This would explain the absence of gametophytes of this species in the Mediterranean Sea." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 204). - (10 November 2023) - M.D. Guiry
