Nomenclatural note
Although traditionally assigned to the Spahacelariales and considered the basionym of Sphacelaria pennata, Prud'homme van Reine (1982: 242) has rejected Conferva pennata Hudson as a "nomen dubium confusum" (see also Dixon & Parkes 1968: 80). Treated as a synonym of Sphacelaria cirrosa (Roth) C.Agardh, 1824 by Fletcher (1924: 134). - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
Taxonomic note
The material illustrated by Dillwyn (1807, pl. 86 A-F) represents Sphacelaria plumigera Holmes (Prud'homme van Reine 1982: 131). - (02 October 2024) - M.D. Guiry
