The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Intended type locality locality: Cape Leeuwin, Western Australia (Silva & al. 1996: 537).

A description was not provided by Sonder (1880: 35) in a list of Australian algae; the name was subsequently used validly by Ohta (1973) for an alga from Japan (Silva et al., 1996: 537).
