The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia forfex Harvey
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Womersley (2003: 202) notes that Harvey (1859a, pl. 96) changed the name of his P. forcipata to P. forfex, recognising J. Agardh's earlier use of the former name. - (29 Jan 2009) - Wendy Guiry
This is a marine species.
Lectotype locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 542). Holotype: Harvey; on Posidonia. TCD, Herb. Harvey Trav. Set 186 (Womersley 2003: 202). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Womersley (1979: 495). Isotype in BM (Womersley, 2003: 202). Lectotype: TCD 15353-4 (Díaz-Tapia et al., 2017: table 4).
