The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus savatieri (Hariot) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs

Type locality: Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 542). Lectotype: PC 0011879 (upper left specimen) (Silva 1996-to date Notes: LT fide Kim 2005, 167 (INA).
Origin of species name
Adjective A (Latin), pertaining to Japan (Stearn 1973).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Abbott (1999) considers that Hawaiian specimens may not belong to the same taxon of the Japanese ones and reports them as Polysiphonia savatieri Hariot.
This is a marine species.
