The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melanothamnus platycarpus (Børgesen) Díaz-Tapia & Maggs
Polysiphonia gopnathensis Thivy & Sreenivasa Rao 1963
This is a marine species.
Type locality: Bombay, India (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 544). Type: Børgesen 5024; (Silva 1996-to date Notes: 19.xii.1927; probable syntypes: BM 106768 and 106760 (Díaz-Tapia, 2017).
