The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterosiphonia javanica (G.Martens) De Toni
Type locality: Palabuan (Palabuhanratu), Java, Indonesia (Silva & al. 1996: 549).
