Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Aulacoseira is Melosira crenulata (Ehrenberg) Kützing.

Type locality: Lago Chirripó 1, San José Province, Costa Rica (9.4825°N, 83.4958°W) (Haberyan & Horn 2020: 293). Holotype: Sally Horn and Charles Lafon; 19 March 2000; lake, surface sediment. ANSP GC30922 (Haberyan & Horn 2020: 293, figs 1, 2). Notes: Type material deposited at ANSP (GCM12560) and at California Acad. Sci.
