The type species (holotype) of the genus Halimeda is Halimeda tuna (J.Ellis & Solander) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Gosavisiphon paucimedullaris (Schlagintweit & Ebli) Schlagintweit.

Schlagintweit, F. (2010). Gosavisiphon gen. nov. based on Halimeda paucimedullaris Schlagintweit & Ebli, 1998: a remarkable macroalga (Udoteaceae?) from the Late Cretaceous of the Northern Calcareous Alps, (Austria and Germany), with affinites to Late Palaeozoic and Late Triassic phylloids.
