The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gracilaria is Gracilaria compressa (C.Agardh) Greville.

Type locality: San Jose del Cabo, Lower California (Setchell 1937: 79). Type: J.T. Howell No. 733b; 4 viii 1932; dredged from 20 fathoms. CAS 236481 (Setchell 1937: 79).

Adjective (Latin), with secund branching (Lewis & Short 1890).
