Taxonomic note
"This species, was described by Agardh (1828: 185) from Tangier (Morocco). In the Mediterranean Sea it was then recorded by J. Agardh (1851: 34); Zanardini (1863: 285 pl. XXVII/B); Dufour (1865: 45) and Ardissone & Strafforello (1877: 168) Hauck (1882; 45) considered it (partim) as a synonym of Spermothamnion flabellatum. Ardissone (1883: 302) combined it under the genus Spermothamnion as S. strictum (C. Agardh) Ardissone. He, as previously noted by Bornet in Bornet & Thuret (1876: 26), distinguished it from the related species S. flabellatum, in showing larger thalli, and barrel shaped and wider cells of prostrate axes. It should be noted that Maggs & Hommersand (1993: 145), after having described thalli of S. strictum from British Isles, ignoring S. flabellatum noted that "Thallus size and the diameter of erect axes vary widely... The large and small thallus forms are tentatively considered conspecific, based on morphology of..., but further studies, particularly of reproductive material, are required.". Therefore, only the finding of fertile gametophytes (to date unknown) and a more accurate comparison with S. flabellatum, could confirm or not the conspecificity between the two species already considered such by Hauck (1882: 45). See also the note to S. flabellatum." (Cormaci & al. 2023: 431-432). - (05 December 2023) - M.D. Guiry
