Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type information
Type locality: Zhongjiandao, Xisha Islands, China (Tseng 1985: 15).

Infrageneric classification

Taxonomic notes
Stiger et al. (2000: 258) note that the addition of Phyllocystae to subgenus Sargassum causes a lack of uniformity in morphological characters used for section discrimination: receptacle morphology and vesicle character. Further investigation is needed to clearly define the degree of phenotypic plasticity within and between closely related species in order to better define the sections and obtain finally a reliable taxonomic subdivision of the subgenus Sargassum.

General environment
This is a marine species.
