The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Type locality: Lampung Bay, Sumatra, Indonesia (Silva & al. 1996: 690). Type: PC (Noro, Ajisaka & Yoshida 1994: 27).
