Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladia is Pterocladia lucida (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella caloglossoides (M.Howe) Santelices.

Type locality: San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico; (Silva & al. 1996: 144) Holotype: Dawson; Feb. 7, 1946; On precipitous shore rocks; HAHF; Dawson 425, on sheet 4818, including slides 1178-1181 (Dawson 1953: 78)

Adjective (Latin), little, small, puny (Stearn 1983).
