Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladia is Pterocladia lucida (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella caloglossoides (M.Howe) Santelices

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), little, small, puny (Stearn 1973).

This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 144). Holotype: Dawson; Feb. 7, 1946; On precipitous shore rocks. HAHF Dawson 425, on sheet 4818, including slides 1178-1181 (Dawson 1953: 78).
