Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum aquifolium (Turner) C.Agardh.

Type Information
Type locality: Hawaiian Islands; (Silva & al. 1996: 670) Type: Herbarium Agardh, Lund; (Noro, Ajisaka & Yoshida 1994: 25) Notes: Hawaiian Islands (as Sandwich Islands). According to Magruder (1988: 66), a lectotype needs to be selected from J.G. Agardh's specimens (Yoshida 1986, pers. comm.). Type locality: Oahu, Hawaii; Type specimens: syntypes: LD Hb. Ag. #02389 and #0292 second series (Matteo 2008: 1552).

General Environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
In French Polynesia this species usually grows close to the shoreline in the Gambier and Austral Archipelagos (Matteola 2008: 1552).
