The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Polysiphonia triton P.C.Silva.

Adjective (Latin), thin, fine, slender (Stearn 1973).
