Nomenclatural notes
Silva, Basson & Moe (1996: 173) write "This species is based on Corallopsis opuntia sensu Svedelius (1906b: 192, 199, 200, 215, figs. 4, 5) as distinguished from Corallopsis opuntia J. Agardh. The name Gracilaria opuntia Durairatnam remains to be validated by the provision of a Latin diagnosis and the indication of a type specimen, as required by Arts. 36.2 and 37.1. It should be noted that the binomial Gracilaria opuntia has already been applied, although invalidly, to Corallopsis opuntia J. Agardh. (See Note to G. salicornia [p. 175].)" Here, SIlva, Basson & Moe (1996: 176) write "In distinguishing between Corallopsis opuntia and Gracilaria crassa Harvey ex J. Agardh (treated as a taxonomic synonym of G. canaliculata), V. Krishnamurthy & Rajendran (1986b) noted that no. 30 of Harvey's Ceylon exsiccata, which is the type collection of C. opuntia, apparently includes representatives of more than one species, to judge from the lack of agreement in comments by authors using different distributions. They also noted that J. Agardh described the alga as having evident articulations. In transferring Corallopsis opuntia to Gracilaria, however, V. Krishnamurthy & Rajendran (1986b: 97-99, 101, 103, figs. 1-10; 1987a: 10, 14, figs. 4, 5, table 1) failed to publish a valid combination since they did not give a full and direct reference to the place of publication of the basionym and thus failed to satisfy Art. 33.2. The invalid combination was again cited by V. Krishnamurthy (1989: figs. 2E, 6C). It seems probable that C. opuntia is a taxonomic synonym of G. salicornia. Børgesen (1939b: 110-111) placed Corallopsis concrescens in the synonymy of C. opuntia. B. Xia (1986) merged Gracilaria cacalia and G. minor with G. salicornia." - (20 Jun 2016) - M.D. Guiry
