Type locality: San Pedro, California, U.S.A (Setchell 1912: 233). Type: N.L. Gardner; Growing on rocks in the littoral zone in the neighbourhood of San Pedro. (Setchell 1912: 233). Notes: Holotype: UC 261168: isotype: UC1883760 (Santiañez & Kogame, 2019).

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), canaliculate, with a longitudinal channel or groove (Stearn 1973).
