The type species (holotype) of the genus Dilophus is Dilophus gunnianus J.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota crinita (J.Agardh) Hörnig, Schnetter & Prud'homme.

Type locality: "Hab. ad oras occidentales Novae Hollandiae (Ad Rottnest Isl. a Walcott lectam mihi misit F. de Mueller)." [Rottnest Is., Western Australia]; (Agardh 1897: 99) Holotype: LD; 49509 (De Clerck 2003: 179) Notes: Womersley (1987) notes that there are 5 specimens on the type sheet.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), having tufts of long weak hairs (Stearn 1973).
General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Womersley (1987: 206) notes that the terminal fibrils to the branches in some cases appear to be natural, in other cases they may be proliferations following damage.
