This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Grateloupia angusta (Okamura) S.Kawaguchi & H.W.Wang.

Nomenclatural note
Masuda et al. (1995: 196) note that when Gymnogongrua ligulatus Harvey (no description) was validated by Kützing (1869: 23), no reference was made to the var. angusta at this time and the varietal epithet has not since been validated in this combination. Cryptonemia angusta Okamura (1895: 449, 478) must therefore be treated as a new name. - (24 February 2010) - G.M. Guiry
