Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella caerulescens (K├╝tzing) Santelices & Hommersand.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), irregular (Stearn 1973).
