The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Sargassum odontocarpum var. lanceolatum (Grunow) P.C.Silva.
Type locality: India; (Silva & al. 1996: 690) Type: R. Wight; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: "Hab. in mari Peninsulae Indiae Orientalis".
