John et al. (2004) cite Treptacantha turneri Kütz. as a synonym of this species. They also note that " Silva et al. (1996) in the Indian Ocean checklist of benthic marine algae place Sargassum turneri (Kütz.) Kuntze in the synomy of Sargassum subrepandum (Forssk.) C. Agardh var. rueppelii f. turneri (Kütz.)
