The type species (holotype) of the genus Sargassum is Sargassum bacciferum (Turner) C.Agardh.

Type Information
Type locality: "Hab. in mari Indieco, ad oras Hindostaniae [Persia] (Wigt! [Robert Wight] in Hb. Hookerii 'sub n:o 246 et 248)."; (Agardh 1848: 329) Holotype: Herbarium of Wight; (Noro, Ajisaka & Yoshida 1994: 29) Notes: According to Noro et al. (1994), the Indian Ocean is the type locality. Isotype (Indies orientale) in MEL (MEL 696678). Matteo et al. (2010: 902) give the following data: syntypes: India, TCD 1120, 1121. This seems unlikely as the types should be in BM-K.
Eponomy
Named for Robert Wight (1796-1877), British surgeon and botanist, who held various positions in India, as a surgeon and as Superintendant of the Botanic Gardens at Madras.dras
