The type species (lectotype) of the genus Jania is Jania rubens (Linnaeus) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
The taxonomic or nomenclatural status (or both) of this entity is in some way unresolved and requires further investigation.
Type locality: "Amérique Méridionale Det. Richard et Pavon."; (Lamouroux 1816: 270) Notes: Lectotype: Lamouroux figures (1816: pl. IX : fig. 4 "a" and "B") selected by Woelkerling, Harvey & Reviers (2015: 141) who consider it resonable to select both illustrations in Lamouroux's fig. 4.
Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), warty (Stearn 1973).
This is a marine species.
Almost entirely epilithic, occurring in shallow eulittoral pools or on rocks near low tide level (Womersley & Johansen in Womersley 1996: 307).
