Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Clathromorphum circumscriptum (Strömfelt) Foslie.

Origin of Species Name
Participle (Latin), uniting together by growth (Stearn 1973).
