The type species (lectotype) of the genus Lithophyllum is Lithophyllum incrustans Philippi.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Phymatolithon investiens Foslie.

Type locality: Kjelmø [now Kjelmøya], Finmarken [now Finnmark], Norway; (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 525) Holotype: M. Foslie; 3.viii.1887; collection depth: 4-6 fathoms, ‘paa [= on] L. breviaxe’ [see (Woelkering et al. 2005: 525]; TRH; C26- 3775 (Woelkerling & al. 2005: 525)

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), zoned, banded, marked circularly (Stearn 1973).
