This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Plocamium cartilagineum (Linnaeus) P.S.Dixon

Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), deep red, from scarlet to carmine and crimson (Stearn 1985).

Treated as a form by some authors, although Lyngbye does not specify. We have chose to follow Saunders & Lehmkuhl (2005: 300) in treating the combination at the varietal level.
