The type species (holotype) of the genus Cheilosporum is Cheilosporum sagittatum (J.V.Lamouroux) Areschoug.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Jania pulchella (Harvey) Johansen & Womersley.

Nomenclatural note
According to Silva et al. (1996: 241), the conspecificity of Jania affinis and Cheilosporum pulchellum was noted by Johansen & Womersley (1994: 619) but since the two names have equal priority, those authors should have used the former name rather than proposing the new combination Jania pulchella. - (27 April 2009) - G.M. Taxonomic note
Johansen & Womersley in Womersley (1996: 309) cite this species (basionym) and Jania affinis as synonyms of Jania pulchella. Silva et al (1996: 241) consider C. pulchellum and Jania pulchella to be synonyms of Jania affinis. - (27 April 2009) - G.M. Guiry
