The type species (holotype) of the genus Lepilaena is Lepilaena australis J.Drummond ex Harvey .

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Althenia marina (E.L.Robertson) Yu Ito.

Adjective (Latin), growing in the sea (Stearn 1973).
