The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type locality: southern Australia (Silva & al. 1996: 145). Holotype: Brown; BM (Womersley & Guiry 1994: 137). Notes: According to Womersley & Guiry (1994: 137) the type is from "S coast of N. Holl.".
