Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Palisada paniculata (Kützing) J.N.Norris.

Taxonomic note
Taxon of uncertain identity, maybe conspecific with Osmundea ramosissima (Oeder) Athanasiadis; see note in Furnari et al. (1999: 44). Boisset et al. (2000: 392) note that according to Ardissone (1883), who referred to Kützing's iconography (Kützing, 1865:63, figsa, b), L. paniculata Kützing may be conspecific with 'L. pinnatifida' (probably Osmundea truncata (Kützing) Nam & Maggs. Unfortunately, the type material of Kützing's species is lost (Curator of the Rijksherbarium, personal communication) and no definitive conclusions can be drawn. - (11 May 2006) - G.M. Guiry
