Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Chondrus is Chondrus crispus Stackhouse.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrus giganteus Yendo

Lectotype locality: Cape Inuboi, Chiba Pref., Japan (Yoshida 1991: 6). Lectotype: vii.1906; TI (Yoshida 1991: 6, pl. 26b). Notes: Inubozaki, Chiba Pref. (Mikami 1965: 253). [zaki = cape, point].
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), marked with two-coloured spots, having the centre of one colour surrounded by a broad ring of another (Stearn 1973).
